On my morning walk with Luna I came across a woman who needed some help. Stranded on the side of the busy street in front of my complex, she was on the sidewalk attempting to open a gas container to put in her gas-less car.
As I approached her, I debated on whether I should stop or not. Finally realizing it’d be real mean of me to pass directly by her without offering assistance, I spoke up.
She was having the hardest time opening up the gas container nozzle. With Luna’s leash in one hand and the other on the nozzle, we both twisted and turned and pulled without any luck. We re-read the directions multiple times, but that still didn’t help.
We both started laughing and joking about how we needed a man to pull up and help us. Right when we did, a nice guy in a jeep pulled up and offered to help. *Ask and you shall receive.*
He gets out of the car and proceeds to explain that he’s used one of these containers before and the directions make it look easier to use than it actually is. Yeah. We got that… I can’t believe that thing was so hard to open! It was child AND adult proof.
About 20 minutes later, the woman and man were on their way and I continued along my path to the neighborhood down the street. Needless to say, I was proud of myself. I felt like I had helped make that lady’s morning suck a little less, although all I did was keep her company until the nice man showed up.

Last week, I saw an elderly man just ahead of me walking toward the doors of HEB. As I got closer, he slowed and stumbled a bit. I asked if he was OK, and he asked me if I’d help him. He leaned on my arm all the way in to the store — it was a slow walk and he winced in pain. Inside, we found a motorized cart for him. Turns out, he had broken both legs and was very unsteady and in a lot of pain. Though grateful, he wouldn’t let me help him any further. But I was glad to have been there for him to lean on.
That’s great, Shari! I’m sure that man truly appreciated your help, especially since he was in a lot of pain. Doesn’t make you feel good about humanity when you do stuff like that? Helping our world one person at a time. 🙂
